Get In My Belly! or A Week in Southeast Missouri…

We spent the last week in an area of the country that we are getting more and more familiar with…Sikeston, MO.

With my companies headquarters in St. Louis and friends in East Prairie, MO, we find ourselves coming through the area pretty often as we criss-cross the county.  We were lucky enough to be able to sync up with our friends almost every day for the week we were there, including a twirling recital, a game night, and various dinners, and that’s what most of this post is going to focus on.

Sikeston itself isn’t a town you’ve probably heard of unless you travel between St. Louis and Memphis often.  It’s a pleasant small town, but it has a pretty incredible concentration of good eats!  I certainly did my share of partaking in the edibles, and wanted to share the highlights with you in case you are ever in the area.

First, there is Lambert’s.  It’s the “Home of the Throwed Rolls”.  You read that correctly, they literally throw hot rolls across the restaurant at you during your dinner. There are 3 Lambert’s across the country (Branson, MO area, Gulf Shores, AL area, and Sikeston, but the Sikeston location is the original and it shows…it totally blows the other two away…  They have multiple southern style dinners, all for a fair price…and they have “unlimited pass-arounds”.  They bring bowls of different side items around and scoop them onto your plate…it’s super good and definitely worth a stop if you are passing through.

We also got to swing into a little place called Tasters in East Prairie after the twirling recital.  Although it’s a more typical small town greasy spoon kind of place, the amount of things on the menu is only eclipsed by the generosity of the portions for the price.  Burgers, chicken, pizza, etc…it’s all there and well worth the price!

We then stepped it up a bit and checked out The Glen.  The Glenn is literally in the middle of nowhere, and looks like a cleaned up pole barn on the outside, but once you step inside it feels completely different.  The restaurant has an upscale feel both in appearance and in the menu offerings.  It’s a bit more expensive, but well worth the price.  I’d certainly suggest it if you are in the area and looking for a quality Filet or just want a more upscale dinner.

Last but not least, our friends the Staples suggested we try a restaurant about 30 minutes north of Sikeston in a town called Chaffee.  Rumors of this burger joint called Kenny’s Flippin’ Burgers tickled our imagination with rumors of donut burgers and super cheesy burgers…but little did we know what we were in store for…

When we first arrived, I was shocked that it was so small.  It was literally a little building on the other side of the tracks…not only was it not fancy, but it was totally unremarkable from the outside with the exception of the completely full parking lot.  When we got inside, we timed it just right and were able to sit almost immediately…  Then we got our first look at the menu…

As you can see, there were a ton of crazy things to choose from.  Karen had a burger with Funnel Cake as the bun.  I had “theBomb.com” which is a cheeseburger with egg and sauce of your choice (I added queso), which is then totally wrapped in bacon and deep fried.  Steph had Mac-N-Cheese on her burger, and Aaron had chicken strips…he’s not much of a beef eater.

We thought we had seen it all, but then we ordered desert.  Aaron ordered the Cotton Candy/Ice Cream Burrito.  You read that right…they roll out cotton candy, the put ice cream and Fruity Pebbles cereal inside, then roll it up like a burrito.

I ordered a Strawberry Shake that looked like a piece of art.  The glass was rolled in icing and Fruity Pebbles, then topped with whipped cream and cherry (and more Fruity Pebbles) and then finally garnished with an entire Good Humor Strawberry Ice-cream Bar.  unbelievably, it tasted better than it looked!

As many of you probably know, few things excite me as much as good food and friends, and we had plenty of both last week!  Next time you are in the area, stop and check out some of these stops…you won’t regret it!
